The 8 x 57 JS is a first-class cartridge for distances up to around 180 m. It is ideal for hunting in the forest and as a driven hunt cartridge. It is also a first-class big game cartridge for Central European game. It is also very popular there as a universal cartridge. With it, you usually have less hematoma formation than with fast, weaker calibers.
The 8 x 57 JS was developed from the old military cartridge 8 x 57 I by increasing the bullet diameter from .318" to .323" (8.08 / 8.20 mm) and was given an S in the designation. It was introduced in 1905 and quickly became popular with hunters.
The special feature of the RWS H-Mantel bullet is the famous H-groove, a constriction in the middle of the jacket that is shaped as a predetermined breaking point. It supports the separation of the two bullet cores of different hardness and is jointly responsible for the dual action system of this bullet:
The front part disintegrates very quickly after hitting the body of the game with high energy output. This guarantees maximum effectiveness.
The cylindrical rear section of the H-MANTEL bullet separates at the H-groove, penetrates even large game bodies without significant deformation, and thus reliably delivers the desired effect.
The suction effect of the rear section ensures that the fragments of the front bullet core largely leave the game body, thus protecting the game.
